DESCRIPTION:Utah Prairie Dog Day Returns to Bryce Canyon on May 9 \nThe celebration will include an art contest open to K-12 students in the local area \n \nBRYCE\, UT – Utah Prairie Dog Day returns to Bryce Canyon National Park on Thursday\, May 9. This annual celebration of one of the park’s most unique animals features ranger-led prairie dog viewing\, family-friendly activity booths\, and a special keynote presentation. For a detailed schedule of events\, please visit go.nps.gov/UtahPrairieDogDay. \nTo help promote the event\, the park is holding a Prairie Dog art contest open to all students kindergarten through 12th grade in Garfield\, Wayne\, and Kane counties. Art contest submissions will be judged by park staff\, and the winner in each grade will receive a $50 gift certificate to the Bryce Canyon Association Visitor Center bookstore. The grand prize winner will also be featured on the 2024 Utah Prairie Dog Day poster.  \nEntries must show the Prairie Dog in its natural environment\, measure 11 inches by 17 inches or smaller\, and can be created using any artistic medium. Artists should include their name and grade level on the back of the artwork. Entries can be mailed to Bryce Canyon National Park at P.O. Box 640201\, Bryce\, Utah and should be postmarked by April 5. Entries can also be scanned and emailed to the park at brca_information@nps.gov. This eclipse will be visible for millions of people in the Western Hemisphere.\n\n\nAn annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon covers the Sun’s center\, leaving the Sun’s visible outer edges to form a “ring of fire” or annulus around the Moon. \nDuring an annular eclipse\, it is never safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing. Review these safety guidelines to prepare for Oct. 14\, 2023. \nOn Oct. 14\, 2023\, the annular eclipse will begin in the United States\, traveling from the coast of Oregon to the Texas Gulf Coast. Bryce Canyon National Park invites the public to join rangers for a volunteer event on September 23\, 2023\, from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Individuals\, school groups\, families and community organizations are all encouraged to participate. For more information and to sign up\, please visit go.nps.gov/BrycePLD. \n  \nDo you like to paint? Hike? Keep a beautiful area trash-free? Projects on September 23 will include painting fences\, closing off social trails and picking up trash at viewpoints. Volunteers will meet at the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center plaza at 12:00 p.m. and then break into project teams. Safety gear and supplies will be provided. Work will wrap-up at 3:00 p.m. \n  \nEntrance to all federally managed sites is free on  September 23\, 2023. Additionally\, each volunteer will receive an entry pass valid at all federally managed public lands\, including all national parks and recreation areas. The pass is a single-use ticket and valid for one year after date of issue. \n  \nIn addition to the free entry pass\, one night of campsite reservation fees for your party will be waived in exchange for three hours of volunteer work. The entrance fee waiver for fee-free days does not cover amenity or user fees for activities such as camping\, boat launches\, transportation\, or special tours. \nThe annual $80 America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass allows unlimited entrance to more than 2\,000 federal recreation areas\, including all national parks that normally charge an entrance fee.
